Backups are one of the most difficult and error-prone parts of running a business that uses computers. I have a solution
that provides a 'hands-off' backup system which gives so-called 'off-site' backups without tapes or Zip drives. Backups are 'insurance'
for your computer records. If you lose your accounting data, you may not be able to recover completely without backups
(which can cause problems with the IRS), not to mention the time it would take to re-type your data manually. If you have
a broadband Internet connection (like DSL, cable, Fire2Wire or ClearWire) you can use my backup solution. If you don't have a broadband
connection, I can get you set up with one.
There are many reasons why backups could be needed:
- Fire/Flooding. You are most likely insured against these types of accidents, and will be able to rebuild your buildings,
etc. But your data will be gone.
- Theft. If your computer is stolen, so is the data on it. With backups stored off-site, you can get a new computer, and get
all your data back, with little or no data loss.
- Power surges. Power surges are a big factor in the corruption of computer data. You can protect yourself from this to a large
extent, by using battery backups and surge protectors. But even surge protectors are not fail safe.
- Human error. A file could be accidentally deleted, when it shouldn't have been. With a backup solution in place, you can safely
recover the lost file from the backup server, and only lose a few hours of work, instead of days, weeks or even months.
My backup solution also provides the certainty that no one can see your files while they are being backed up or after they are stored on my server,
because they are encrypted using state-of-the-art cryptographic technology, even before they leave your computer.
I use the Open Source Backup package Box Backup to
provide my backup service. Box Backup is a secure and reliable backup solution, and is actively being developed, by a
dedicated group of volunteers.

An example: 2 machines that need to ba backed up. The first machine has about 25GB that needs to be backed up, and
the other has about 6GB. Installation fee is $200 (once for each machine). The monthly fee for the first machine
is $45 + $20 (2 x $10) = $65. The second machine is $45 per month, since it doesn't need to go over the 10GB. This gives
a total of $110 per month for both machines.
